The Wild Truth about Baylor’s Most Unusual Campus Residents…The Baylor Bears!
When you think of college life, your mind probably goes to things like all-nighters, coffee-fueled study sessions, football games, and dorms. But at Baylor University, just 20 miles south of our office in Waco, Texas, “college” life includes something a little more…wild.
Since 1917, Baylor has housed live bears right ON campus. Yes…real, living, American black bears. Not just costumes at the games. These aren’t temporary guests or zoo animals on a loan, they’re the beloved mascots treated like royalty, complete with a care routine that rivals any five-star resort.
A Tradition Over a Century Old
The first bear to arrive to Baylor’s campus was over 100 years ago, kicking off a long-standing tradition that continues to this day. Judge Indy and Judge Belle live in the Bill and Eva Williams Bear Habitat, located right on campus! The bear habitat is custom-built for the bear’s comfort, safety, and enrichment. Students and visitors can stroll by daily to see them lounging, playing, or munching on snacks.
Top-Tier Treatment for Top-Tier Mascots
The two bears don’t just live on campus…they thrive! Judge Indy and Judge Belle receive regular veterinary care, carefully planned diets, and an environment designed to reflect their natural habitat as closely as possible. So who cares for these bears? The Baylor students have the Chamber of Commerce organization, where they are responsible for the bears’ day-to-day care and well-being. Imagine going to college and your extra-curricular being to take care of bears?! How neat!
